About the talk: As many as three dozen crimes against women are reported every hour in India. While most cases of sexual violence go unreported in India and even in rich liberal democracies, the conviction rates for such cases are dismal. Despite rampant sexual assaults against women all over the world, why do only a small fraction of their assailants get convicted? The answer may lie in the criminal justice systems and in patriarchal values, argues one of the world’s leading experts on the economics of gender, Professor Mukesh Eswaran of the University of British Columbia, in the June 2019 ISBInsight Lecture. Professor Eswaran will also discuss the policy implications of the faulty delivery of justice in his lecture.
About the Speaker: Mukesh Eswaran is an Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of British Columbia, Canada. His Princeton University Press book Why Gender Matters in Economics was the winner of the 2015 PROSE Award in Textbook/Social Sciences, Association of American Publishers.
